Samsung launches Android-powered printers, with a 10.1″ screen that connects you directly to the Web

prf

Android has long transcended its smartphone roots, but Samsung is now taking the Google-led operating system to the printing realm, with what it’s calling the world’s first Android-powered printer.
Straight out of left-field, this news falls hot on the heels of the Korean technology giant launching its first tablet for enterprises earlier today, and a virtual reality headset yesterday, so it’s been a busy and diverse week for the company.

The internet on your printer

The new multi-function printer (MFP) models were introduced at IFA in Berlin, and are aimed squarely at the business fraternity. As you can see from this close-up of the printer’s control panel, it very much has the familiar Android look and feel, though with options specific to printing – including ‘Scan & Send’ and ‘Job Status’.

Curiously, the Samsung Smart MultiXpress series feature a 10.1-inch full touchscreen panel that lets you connect directly to the Web, meaning you can access maps, emails, and pretty much any online content without the need for a PC.
There are ten new MFP models, across four separate categories. These are:
  • X4300 series of A3 Color MFPs: The X4300 series of A3 color MFPs consist of X4300LX, X4250LX, and X4220RX models with an output speed of 30, 25, and 22 pages per minutes (ppm) respectively. X4300 series are equipped with Dual-Scan ADF technology, enabling them to scan up to 100 double-sided images per minute (ipm) for color and up to 120 double-sided ipm for mono. All models are equipped with Samsung’s Rendering Engine for Clean Page (ReCP) technology and Polymerized Toner, proving sharp, vivid, glossy professional color quality. The X4300LX model MFPs have a print capacity of up to 85,000 pages per month, with 23,000 pages for black and white toner and 100,000 pages for drum.
  • K4350 series of A3 Monochrome MFPs: The K4350 series of A3 Monochrome MFPs consist of K4350LX, K4300LX, and K4250RX models with an output speed of 35, 30, and 25 ppm respectively. The K4350 series MFPs are equipped with Dual-Scan ADF technology, enabling them to scan up to 100 double-sided ipm for color and up to 120 double-sided ipm for mono. The K4350LX model MFP has a print capacity of up to 85,000 pages per month with 35,000 pages for toner. Drum has an output of 200,000 pages.
  • M5370 series of A4 Monochrome MFPs: The M5370 series of A4 Monochrome MFPs consist of M5370LX and M4370LX models with an output speed of 53 and 43 ppm respectively. The M5370 series MFPs are equipped with Dual-Scan ADF technology, enabling them to scan up to 80 double-sided ipm. The M5370 series MFPs can print up to 300,000 pages per month with 30,000 pages for toner. Drum has an output of 100,000 pages.
  • M4580 series of A4 Monochrome MFPs: The M4580 series of A4 Monochrome MFPs consist of M4580FX and M4583FX models with an output speed of 45 ppm. M4580FX is sold through the OA channel and M4583FX is sold with the IT channel. The M4580 series MFPs are equipped with Dual-Scan ADF technology, enabling them to scan up to 60 double-sided ipm. The M4580 series MFP can print up to 200,000 pages per month and 40,000 pages for toner. Drum has an output of 100,000 pages.
So…what do these badboys look like? Have a gander for yourself.

Asus adds Zen to the Android Wear smartwatch

Promises, promises. Asus went into this year's IFA show in Berlin with the immodest pledge of revealing the best looking Android Wear smartwatch to date. Featuring a curved 2.5D design on the front and a stainless cover on the back, its newly announced ZenWatch emphasizes style above all else. Its price also isn't bad, coming in at 199 euros, and it has a set of high-quality internal components, too — including a 1.6-inch AMOLED display, 4GB of storage and 512MB of RAM, and the same Qualcomm processor as inside the first Android Wear watches. But Asus wants to wow you with its looks, not specs.

A tan leather strap connects an Asus-branded buckle to its chunky and well polished body. Fine detailing like stitching on the strap and exposed screws in the back of the watch are borrowed from the classic watch industry. There's an elegance to the ZenWatch that would work much better if it a smaller device. As it is now, it has the dimensions of big and sporty watches but the smooth finish and style of a more refined device. That stylistic clash undermines Asus' premise of this being the most attractive Android Wear watch — the Moto 360 still seems to have more idiosyncratic character than any of its subsequent competitors.

The software on the ZenWatch is the standard Android Wear, complemented with a couple of added features. There's a "tap tap" function to find your phone, a remote control for your smartphone's camera, and more than a hundred watch faces to choose from. Asus hasn't yet revealed the release date for its first Android Wear smartwatch, but you can see it up close and personal in our photos below.

Sony Announces New SmartWatch 3 And Moves Over To Android Wear

Today Sony announced its new SmartWatch, and did something a lot of people, including some pundits, assumed it would not, namely moving the device to Google GOOGL +1.22%’s Android Wear. Previous versions of its SmartWatch had used a proprietary operating system that, while compatible with non-Sony Android devices, didn’t offer much in the way of app support.

But Sony’s SmartWatch 3 does indeed come pre-loaded with Android Wear, which is Google’s official wearables platform. There are going to be lots of advantages of this to Sony. The company won’t have to develop its own apps – although it will, of course – and it won’t have to tempt developers to learn how to build things for its own platform, with no hope of financial reward. Instead, Sony will be able to leverage the power of Google, and use standard Android Wear apps.

Sony moves its SmartWatch over to Android Wear for its next version

But the company has also realised that it can’t sell smartwatches with similar spec to LG or Samsung’s, without investing some time in making the product unique. So what it has done is included two apps that are designed to add value, and persuade you to give your smartwatch money to it, instead of one of the other firms. The first app is Sony’s famous Walkman branded player. As a music playback app, it perhaps doesn’t add much that isn’t available elsewhere, aside from letting you store music on the watch’s 4GB of internal storage. That also means that you can use the watch as a music player, without needing to carry anything else, besides a Bluetooth headset that is.

The second app is by far the best idea though, it’s called Lifelog, and it’s also installed on the new Sony Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and Tablet Z3 Compact. It’s able to watch your activity, and because Sony’s smartwatch has GPS built-in, you can head out for a run, track your distance, route and other metrics without having to drag your phone with you. The Walkman music player, when paired with Bluetooth headphones also comes into play here, if you can’t run without a soundtrack.

Add in to these added value apps the fact that the Sony SmartWatch 3 is waterproof, and can be left submerged in water for 30 minutes, then you’re left with a device that has real selling points over its rivals. It’s similarly priced too, at around 230 Euros (£190 or $300).

Vodafone introduces new 3G Wi-Fi dongle at Rs 2399

Vodafone has launched a 3G Wi-Fi dongle for users in India to benefit from seamless internet connectivity on the telecom operator’s trusted wireless broadband network across the country. Priced at Rs 2399, this gadget will take the carrier’s SIM card and create a Wi-Fi zone which can be accessed by up to 10 devices at once.
Vodafone Dongle

This service has been launched in 4 metros right now, namely Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. Furthermore, it is soon to be released in other areas within the country as well, but in a gradual manner. Named R206Z, the model allows for data transfer speeds of up to 21.1Mbps over Wi-Fi.

This dongle is powered by a 1500mAh battery which is able to grant it the firepower needed to keep going for up to 3.75 hours in one complete charge. On top of that, this device can also be used as a storage hub, as it comes equipped with a microSD card slot which can support memory cards of up to 32GB.

For those worried about security measures, the Vodafone R206Z provides support for WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Set-up). This adds one more layer of authentication over and above the usual Wi-Fi based authentication.

Vivek Mathur, who’s the chief commercial officer in Vodafone India has cited that this launch of the new product is ‘well timed’ in order to meet the demand for high speed mobile data services. He has also said that the gadget will help further enhancement of the company’s 3G offerings in the market.

Like we said, the new Vodafone 3G Wi-Fi dongle has been priced by the Indian carrier at Rs 2399. It ships with a charger and a USB cable bundled with it.

Sony Launches 6 Bravia 4K Televisions in India, Starting Rs. 1,74,900

sony_bravia_4k_tv_launch.jpg

Sony on Tuesday announced the launch of 6 new Bravia 4K televisions in 3 new series in India. While 4 are already available in the country, ranging in price from Rs. 1,74,900 to Rs. 7,04,900, 2 others will be released in India by the end of September.

The Japanese consumer electronics giant said the 6 new Bravia 4K TVs offer "excellent picture and audio quality, while featuring a bevy of new features will appeal to the discerning consumer."

Sony says, "All 6 of the new 4K models offered by Sony will incorporate the powerful picture processing engine, 4K X-Reality PRO, which uses a combination of unique up-scaling and super resolution technology from Sony to offer any content in beautiful and stunning 4K resolution."

All 6 new models also support HDMI 2.0, which Sony says gives them the ability to display 4K/60p content. The models will also be equipped with a new decoder which supports HEVC and can playback 4K/60p content from Internet streaming services and USB playback. The TVs are also compatible with MHL 3.0, which supports 4K output from smartphones and tablets

Other features included on Sony's new Bravia 4K TVs include X-tended Dynamic Range (for a higher dynamic range of brightness with a proprietary backlighting algorithm), Triluminos display (for a wider gamut of colours), and a Wedge form factor for increased stability (on select models).

The company is also introducing 'One-Flick Entertainment,' a feature that allows viewers to quickly browse content across different sources at home. The bundled One-Flick Remote Control gives users 'intuitive control', with simple swipes allowing users to access both offline and online content. By touching compatible NFC-enabled smartphones or tablets to the One-Flick Remote Control, users can see content stored on those devices.

Also on the new Sony Bravia 4K televisions is the 'Social Viewing' feature, which enables users to Skype chat (with the built-in camera) apart from keeping track of their social media accounts.

Sony has detailed pricing for the 4 already available Bravia 4K TVs, with the 79-inch Bravia KD-79X9000B priced at Rs. 7,04,900, the 55-inch Bravia KD-55X9000B priced at Rs. 3,14,900, the 55-inch Bravia KD-55X8500B priced at Rs. 2,54,900, and the 49-inch Bravia KD-49X8500B priced at Rs. 1,74,900. The 85-inch Sony Bravia KD-85X9500B and 65-inch Bravia KD-65X9000B will be released by the end of September - with prices only revealed then.

8 out of 10 internet consumers have privacy concerns over wearable devices

Nearly 80 % consumers have privacy concerns with wearable Internet of Things (IoT) connected technologies.

However, half of those same consumers were okay to share data if compensated with a coupon or discount.

The study conducted by Acquity Group, which is now part of Accenture Interactive, covered more than 2,000 consumers across the United States which reveals a gap in consumers' fears of data privacy and their actual purchasing behavior.

President of Acquity Group Jay Dettling said that companies should focus on specific benefits that sharing data will deliver to consumers.

Specifically, consumers are most willing to share wearable data for coupons and discounts based on their lifestyles (28 %), information on better workouts to reach their goals (22 %), information on the best foods to eat (22 %), coupons for fitness gear (19 %).

LG is all set to launch the LG G Watch R at IFA 2014 in Berlin

With the Motorola Moto 360 expected to be officially launched on September 4, 2014, LG will be coming out with a round smartwatch of its own with the LG G Watch R. The LG G Watch R will be officially unveiled a week after the Moto 360 launch.
Unlike the Motorola Moto 360, the LG G Watch R comes in a full circle design and is considered better since it looks more like a piece of jewelry rather than a smartwatch. At first, the LG Watch R was believed to be something that would replace the existing G Watch. But as it turned out, the LG G Watch R is actually pegged as the latest member for LG’s Android Wear roster.
Design-wise, many feel that the LG G Watch R is a better version when you talk about the rounded design pitch. The Moto 360 is not actually entirely round with the screen being cuts off by a horizontal gap near the bottom portion.
For now, the best you can tell from the LG G Watch R is through the teaser video that they had released. No further details or specifics are available for now aside from the fact that it would run on Android Wear and that it will have buttons on the side.
Though the announcement of the LG G Watch R does somehow spoil the coming of the Moto 360, its popularity could now come with a time constraint, especially once LG officially announces its own bet next week.
The LG G Watch R is expected to be announced at the IFA 2014 electronics trade show in Berlin which could further shed off some more specific details that many would want to find out.

Samsung Announces Level Box Mini Bluetooth Speaker, Kind of Like a Jambox

samsung level box mini5

Samsung added to their line of Level audio products this morning with the announcement of the new Level Box Mini. As the name suggests, this is indeed the smaller version of their previously announced Level Box.

The Box Mini is Bluetooth speaker that offers users “a smart, seamless user experience combined with Samsung’s iconic design and premium sound technology.” The body of the speaker is “metallic,” sports a large 55mm stereo speaker and a passive radiator, which is “optimized to deliver a premium-quality sound that is powerful, crisp and balanced.” You could use it for conference calls or consume media, just like any other Bluetooth speaker. Devices are paired to it via NFC.

Through Samsung’s Level App, a user could control the Level Box Mini by adjusting volume, sending texts via speech, asking S Voice to complete tasks, etc.

Samsung noted in a press release for the Level Box Mini that it is 30% slimmer than the Level Box and includes a 1,600mAh battery that can last up to 25 hours. The Level Box Mini will be available in four colors:  blue, black, red, and silver. Samsung did not mention availability or pricing.

LG Announces Sonos-Like Hi-Fi Speakers Called Music Flow

LG_Music_Flow_1

Last night, LG entered the Hi-Fi home audio market by introducing a new brand of audio products, called Music Flow. Music Flow, as a brand, is made up of a set of home audio speakers along with a companion app that allows you to easily listen to your entire collection of digital music both outside and inside the home.

On one side of the Music Flow equation, you have a set of Hi-Fi speakers (plus a bridge) that are setup within your house. The speakers range in power from 70W to 40W to sound bars. With the tap of your device, thanks to NFC, you can play music through a speaker with ease (a “first” in home Hi-Fi systems). If the speakers are bridged throughout your house, you could carry on your music experience in each room, a lot like how Sonos works.

On the other side of Music Flow, you have a companion app called Music Flow Player. This app is the hub and controller for your speaker system. According to LG’s announcement, the app also lets you listen to your music collection outside of your home even if the music is stored on a variety of devices. The app lets you listen to internet radio stations (Spotify, Deezer, Napster, and TuneIn) and provides recommendations for playlists as well.

If you needed an actual reason to buy these, the system may have one special feature. Should you be out and about, jamming away to your music collection via phone, but then return home, you can continue listening without interruption on your Music Flow system at home. That’s kind of cool, right?

The collection of Music Flow products will be on display at IFA during the first week of September. Availability will start in the UK this month before spreading to other European markets next month. A global rollout should happen some time after that. No pricing was announced.

Quick review: Spice Smart Pulse M9010

Spice Smart Pulse M9010

Right of the bat, the Spice Smart Pulse M9010 smartwatch isn’t something that you can’t do without, but it does provide a glimpse of what local vendors in India are up to as far as wearable technology goes.
We check out the Spice Smart Pulse M9010 to provide you with a quick review based on the specifications.

Specification Overview

ComponentValue
Display Size1.6-inch screen; 320 x 240p resolution
SoftwareJava
CameraVGA
Onboard Storage256KB
Expandable Storage8GB (microSD card)
Battery420mAh
Dual SIM1 Normal + 1 micro
Connectivity2G, Bluetooth

Design, Build & Display

The first thing that you will notice about the Smart Pulse M9010 is that it is made out of plastic. What we observed was that Spice has tried to give it a metallic kind of finish by giving it a metallic texture and even tried to top it with industrial design screws, but it has more or less failed in that aspect. To add a little spice to the mix, Spice is even offering two extra straps.
The Smart Pulse is squarish in design with rounded corners and within that is the 1.6-inch display. We will give it to Spice on using a display that provides great brightness and colours in low lighting conditions, but as soon as you wander off in the Sun or a well-lit area, the display gives up and the colours seem to be giving our a smudged or washed off effect.
We are sure you will get a real metallic watch for that price sans the smartwatch capabilities. We will leave it to you to decide – real metal or plastic with metallic finish!

Software & Interface

We would have expected Spice to atleast honour the demand of current youth by powering its smartwatch with Android, but it has definitely failed here again. Java based interface is that last thing that one would and inability to add new apps is definitely a huge deterrent.
The interface will remind you of a feature phone that you would have been using 2-3 years back – if you aren’t still holding onto one right now. Navigation on the Smart Pulse M9010 has to be done through three capacitive keys below the display.
As far as keyboard is concerned – predictable enough – it is tiny. Sending out an SMS may seem to be a daunting task. You can pair the smartwatch with your smartphone for notifications – but they will remain just that – notifications – and you can’t act on them.
If you fancy using Smart Pulse’s VGA camera to shoot pictures, you can do so using a remote capture option beyond the manual controls right through the smartwatch.
You find some prebuilt apps like a file manager, one game, among other things – all in all limited functionality accompanied by tiny controls that really do not appeal a great deal.

Storage

256KB onboard storage is so like 1990s; however, having said that you can have an 8GB microSD card for additional storage on the smartwatch. We are not sure why one would accept 256KB storage and to top if why would one go for 8GB storage on a smartwatch that offers no ability to add new apps.

Battery

The 420mAh battery may not sound too impressive, but given the components of the smartphone, we wouldn’t expect Spice to go overboard and fit the Smart Pulse M9010 with a huge battery. Considering that the display and the OS aren’t too tasking on the battery and with only 2G connectivity option the 420mAh should give you a day on single recharge.

Sound & Video

Onboard speakers are definitely great and the accompanying headphones aren’t impressive either. We wouldn’t recommend listening to songs on this one as you wouldn’t get the feeling you might be looking for from your smartwatch.
You can play videos, but it seems that only onboard camera recorded videos are supported.

Conclusion

An outlay just below ₹4,000 may seem impressive at first and specifically until the Smart Pulse M9010 is still inside the box, but as soon as it is out there is just one feeling we are left with – What!!!
We do not see using the device on a day to day basis and definitely not while going to office or a social gathering as we don’t want people to look at us with strange expressions. Further, attending to phone calls on a gadget slapped onto your wrist isn’t practical enough.

Kingston MobileLite Wireless review: Add zing to your iPhone, iPad

Kingston's MobileLite Wireless is an accessory that lets you stream multimedia content to your mobile devices over the same Wi-Fi network.

The device does not come with in-built storage, but allows users to use storage mediums such as a USB drive (pen drive) and a micrSD/SD card storage up to 2TB.

What would you use it for?

A number of mobile devices, including iPad, iPhone and even some Android devices, do not offer an external storage slot. Some Android devices do support the USB on-the-go standard but you need an additional accessory or a USB drive that supports the microUSB standard.

With the help of devices like MobileLite Wireless, you can access any USB drive or microSD/SD card, stream multimedia content and even copy (some) files to and from mobile devices. It is especially useful for use with Apple's iPhone and iPad since the two don't support any external storage medium.

MobileLite Wireless also features an 1,810mAh battery so that you can carry it around and use it in places where you don't have a power socket. It even doubles up as a power bank to charge your devices just in case you're low on power. This minimizes the need to carry a separate power bank which becomes an absolute necessity if you own an iPhone.

Connect it to a PC and you can use it as an SD card reader as well.

What's in the box?
Kingston MobileLite Wireless comes with a microUSB-to-USB cable and a microSD card adapter. The cable lets you charge the device and connect it to a PC to make it a card reader or simply charge a compatible device with the device.

Look and feel

At first glance, Kingston MobileLite Wireless looks like an external hard disk. However, it sports a compact form factor (124.8x59.9x17.3mm) and can easily slip into your pocket although it's thicker than most modern smartphones.

It is very light at just 98gram since it doesn't come with in-built storage. The right edge features the SDcard reader slot while the left one has the micro-USB and USB ports.

The bottom edge features the power key camouflaged with the black surface and a pin-hole reset slot. There are three LED indicators on top for Power, wireless connectivity and internet connectivity.

Setting up
Setting up MobileLite Wireless device is fairly simple. You just need to turn it on and the device shows up as an open Wi-Fi access point in your smartphone/tablet.

Simply connect your device to the network and configure it through the Kingston MobileLite app (available for download on Amazon Appstore, Google Play Store and iTunes App Store).

You can then insert a microSD/SD card or a USB drive on the device. The app is your gateway to device enabling access to files and even acting as media player. We tried it with a Kingston HyperX Predator 512GB. It is nice to have tons of stored content available to your device without having to store it locally on the smartphone/tablet.

You can still stay connected to the internet via Wi-Fi through the device. The app prompts you to select and sign-on to a network. A password can also be set to restrict access to the device.

Our experience

Once you complete the setup, the MobileLite app lets you access all the files on your SD card and/or USB drive. We tried connecting MobileLite Wireless with three — an iPad, an Android phone and an iPhone, simultaneously.

After an initial delay, we were able to stream different HD videos (1080p) to all three connected devices without any hiccups. It's worth pointing out that not all video file formats will natively run on the iPhone or iPad (AVI and MKV files did not run), but that's because of the file support offered by the devices. We were also able to play music files and view PDFs, photos and Word documents.

Files can also be copied from the storage device (through MobileLite Wireless) and vice versa. There are limitations when it comes to iOS devices as Apple does not offer third party apps complete access to the file system. You can only copy videos and pictures from the iPhone/iPad to the storage devices.

Trying to stream files through VLC Player on a Mac, we were able to get transfer speeds of about 3MB per second (data received), which is decent.

Kingston MobileLite Wireless can last about five hours on full charge and can charge an iPhone 5 up to 50% battery level. We wish Kingston had offered a bigger battery.

Verdict
We would recommend Kingston MobileLite Wireless as at a price of Rs 4,000 (MRP) and street price of Rs 3,500 is a very handy accessory to have, particularly if you own an iPad or iPhone.

It is not too expensive and lets you access an external storage source up to 2TB and also adds up as a portable charger in emergency situations. We just wish it supported Windows Phone devices and sported a bigger battery.

Amazon Fire TV Now Available In India

A few days after Amazon pumped $2 billion into its online store, its Amazon Fire TV is entering the Indian market. Surprisingly, instead of selling it through their portal at Rs. 9,190, it will be sold by Shopyourworld.com.

If you are one of those who love to log in to YouTube and watch the sitcoms or movies, this is the product for you and is aptly called ‘media streaming set-top box.'
The box is powered by Snapdragon quad-core processor with a dedicated Adreno 320 graphics engine and 2 GB storage memory, which transforms an HDTV into a world of online entertainment.

Biggest positive is that one will get legal access to the TV shows, movies, videos, music, games, photos and exclusive features like voice search, ASAP and FreeTime. As a bonus, the Fire TV combines subscriptions with Amazon’s massive digital library, which allows its users the freedom to rent videos and movies.

The box has HDMI ports and can stream content up to 1080p HD with Dolby Digital plus 7.1. Considering that video piracy is big industry in India, there will be a doubt about how many of them are ready to pay for what they watch on a TV.

Meanwhile, it also uses internet to download the videos and considering the bandwidth and the prices in India, Amazon may find it tough to penetrate the market and this might be one of the reasons for selling through some other website.

While the games are also available on Amazon, the set-top box due to its configuration does not support high-res games and if you are looking to play only games, then this is not for you.

OnePlus OneWatch Reportedly Leaked in Photo of Screenshot, Features Premium Design

OnePlus OneWatch

A photographed screenshot taken from the OnePlus website, leaked by BGR India, shows off what could be the startup company’s next project – a smartwatch. Given the name OneWatch, it is still unclear whether this device is even real, let alone powered by Android Wear or a CyanogenMod build of something else.
What is apparently known are the materials the device is made of, as BGR India was also able to scoop up design sketches of the hardware, which show off an OLED display, “Saphire” glass, Qi wireless charging, configurable crown button on the side, leather bands, curved battery, and a titanium exterior.
If it is real, it looks kinda hot.

There are two things that lead us to believe this could just be a troll, though. First, “Saphire” is spelled wrong. Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but usually designers and engineers know how to spell out components they are using for a device. At least, I would hope so. Secondly, the last time a leak came from a “screenshot of the OnePlus website,” it was found to be a hoax.
We know OnePlus has been the source of controversy in the Android community lately, seeing as how you can’t exactly purchase their phone, but if the startup OEM was to announce a smartwatch, possibly based on Android Wear, would you be interested?

128GB SanDisk Class 10 Micro SD Card Down to $99 at Amazon

sandisk 128gb

Amazon currently has SanDisk’s 128GB Class 10 micro SD card available for $99, which is one of the lowest price points we have seen this much storage hit to date. If you look around the web, you will see it as low as $120 at Best Buy and NewEgg, but $99 with free Prime shipping almost makes this a no-brainer. Now that most of you own devices with micro SD slots, since manufacturers are fully buying back into removable storage this year, it may be time to upgrade.
Phones like the Galaxy S5, LG G3, and HTC One (M8) all support 128GB cards.
We ran a poll earlier in the week, asking if a micro SD slot is a deciding factor when buying a phone – 62% of you said yes, that you wouldn’t buy a phone if it didn’t have one.

Swatch plans fitness-based touch wristwatch, CEO tells paper

Swatch plans fitness-based touch wristwatch, CEO tells paper

Swatch plans to equip its Swatch Touch line of plastic watches with electronic functions to measure personal fitness, in a bid to tap into the market for wearable gadgets, the company’s chief executive told a newspaper.

He made his remarks several days after the firm denied working with Apple (AAPL.O) on a smartwatch project.

“Beginning in 2015, we will integrate fitness functions into Swatch Touch,” Swatch Chief Executive Nick Hayek told Sunday’s Neue Zuercher Zeitung am Sonntag, a Swiss weekly.

“It will remain a watch, but will have all today’s usual functions to monitor physical fitness.”

Swatch has in past rejected partnerships over smartwatches and voiced concern about being reliant on software and applications from other companies. Hayek told the newspaper the company would use its own electronic components to ramp up the Swatch brand Touch.

The Swatch Touch model is a touch-screen wristwatch launched in 2011 with a limited range of functions including time, alarm, chronograph, and date.

Like most Swiss luxury watchmakers Swatch has hesitated to jump on the bandwagon for wearables device with interactive functions. A spokeswoman for Swatch was not immediately available for comment.
