Apple Cuts Price on MacBook Pro by $100

Apple Inc. lowered the starting prices for its 13-inch MacBook Pro and its larger, high-end version with retina display by $100, while also unveiling upgrades to the notebooks with retina display.

The new 15-inch MacBook Pro with retina display, whose price was cut to $2,499, has a faster processor and double the memory of the entry-level configuration.

The price on the non-retina 13-inch version, which the company said is popular with users switching from Windows, is now $1,099.

Consumers have migrated away from personal computers and toward smartphones and tablets, such as Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Yet, Apple posted a gain in its Mac category in its fiscal third quarter, with sales rising 13%. Apple said it shipped 4.4 million Macs in the period, which was a new June quarter record, and the Mac has gained market share for 32 of the past 33 quarters.

Apple earlier this year cut the starting price for its MacBook Air laptops by $100.
