GOOGLE IS TINKERING with the design of Chrome OS, the operating system that runs on its Chromebook laptops.

Project Athena will have an entirely revamped user interface (UI) which brings Chrome much closer to the planned design of the recently announced Android L mobile operating system.
Google's Francois Beaufort, who reguarly reveals news of the company's plans on Google+, has shown screenshots of the work in progress, revealing a flatter, more spacious interface.
However there is still much to do before public release of the new version, which is not even fit for the developer Canary channel yet, with no indication of when it will be completed.
If you simply can't wait, it is possible to compile a version of Chromium with the new design so far, but it isn't recommended for the faint of heart.
The convergence between Android and Chrome has been a theme in recent weeks, with the intention being to allow Android apps to run within the Chrome environment.
With the Chromecast streaming device essentially being a cut-down Chrome web browser, this could pave the way to run Android apps on the big screen too.
With Google having focused on reducing the footprint of Android 4.4 Kitkat in order to reduce fragentation between different versions on different devices, it appears that Android L is all about bringing the two operating systems together into a cross-platform Android ecosystem.
Apple has been working towards this for some time and recently reported that over 90 percent of iOS devices were running the latest version .
