With friends like these who needs enemies? Having struggled to keep a lid on iPhone 6 leaks Apple has now had details of its new iPhone leaked on one of the biggest retailers on the planet – Amazon.
In a post since removed but spotted by loadthegame, a seller on Amazon Japan’s marketplace published a product page for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 revealing a host of details:
In a post since removed but spotted by loadthegame, a seller on Amazon Japan’s marketplace published a product page for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 revealing a host of details:
- Dimensions of 130 x 65 x 7mm (5.11 x 2.56 x 0.275 inches)
- Weight of 113g (3.985 oz)
- Gold remains a colour option
- Up to 64GB memory
- 139,999 yen retail price
What remains unknown is the chipset. Apple will dub it the ‘A8′ as it
follows the A7 in the iPhone 5S, but the number of cores, their clock
speed and the amount of RAM will all come under close scrutiny.
Impressive Claims
So let’s break down what we have learned piece-by-piece. Firstly the design. The Amazon page shows the iPhone 6 front and back with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch designs though the proportions of the two handsets are wrong making the 5.5-inch model look huge, which suggests some changes could still come – notably the antenna ‘stripes’ seen on many dummy models.
Secondly the dimensions are potentially not as off-putting as feared. The Amazon leak suggests the phone is just 10mm (0.39-inches) taller than the 4-inch iPhone 5S and a mere 66.4mm (0.25-inches) wider while weight is supposedly unchanged coming in at 113g (3.985 oz) the same as the iPhone 5S.
All this would make one handed use of the iPhone 6 very feasible – in contrast to the video leaks we have seen up to now. Especially considering the 5.2-inch LG G2 – seen by many as at the very limits of one handed usability – which has dimensions of 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm (5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35-inches) and weighs 143 g (5.04 oz).
Maximum memory remains the same with no upgrade to 128GB, as had been rumoured. That said it is possible a 128GB version may exist as the Amazon page didn’t disclose details on any other storage sizes.
Lastly the retail price is a shock. 139,999 yen for the 64GB model listed converts to $1,377 dollars – vastly more than the $849.99 ($919.69 after tax) for the current 64GB iPhone 5S.
Big Questions
So what do we believe?
Amazon Japan removed the page shortly after it was posted (thanks go to loadthegame.com for getting the screengrab) and this is a move which traditionally strengthens the validity of a leak. Despite this ,I have major doubts whether the listing’s information is on the money.
Firstly since the images of the two phones are not proportional it suggests the listing is using an earlier holding image which implies that the dummy units may actually be newer and closer to the final iPhone 6 design.
Secondly the dimensions appear too good to be true. An increase of just 0.39-inches does not seem enough for Apple to squeeze in the extra 0.7-inches of the iPhone 6’s display, even if Apple drastically reduced the top and bottom bezels.
Meanwhile the 0.25-inch width increase again doesn’t look to compensate enough for the extra width a 4.7-inch display will add unless Apple is prepared to change the aspect ratio. This seems extremely unlikely as the widely leaked 1704 x 960 pixel display is an exact 150% increase on the 1136 x 640 resolution therefore maintaining the same proportions.
Finally, while I wouldn’t put it past Apple to stick with a maximum of 64GB of storage (especially to promote extra storage purchases from its expanded and expensive iCloud service) the price feels all wrong. Apple is famous for keeping near-identical asking prices from generation to generation and while the size increase of the iPhone 6 may lead to a small bump this time here it is so big it would surely put off many potential buyers.
Be Cautious
Consequently while many sites are going big on this pseudo-leak, I’d suggest taking the details that emerged with a big pinch of salt. Besides at this rate a new leak will probably clear everything up next week!
